We are MIEC, an insurance company that provides medical professional liability insurance to physicians and acupuncturists in Alaska, California, Hawaii and Idaho. We are owned and operated for the benefit of our policyholders, which number almost 7,400.

We were founded in 1975 by physicians during a time when commercial carriers withdrew from the market. Now, some 40 years later, we remain determined to provide our policyholders with low, responsible and stable premiums.

Position Summary

Under limited supervision, handles coverage inquiries of new and existing business and policy changes involving analysis and recommendation of risk acceptance, using independent judgment within the authority guideline and consultation with management and other departments as appropriate. Works with other team members to achieve department and company goals and objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Incumbent must have the skills and ability to perform the following job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Respond to policyholder inquiries via phone and written communications and consult with senior underwriters.
  • Perform effective risk analysis and approve acceptance or declination of new business, renewals and coverage changes.
  • Underwrite following Department guidelines and principles, and Federal and State insurance laws and regulations.
  • Educate policyholders and physicians in understanding the terms and conditions of their coverage and guide them in making appropriate coverage decisions.
  • Perform underwriting reviews and complete special projects as assigned.
  • Provide high quality customer service in a timely manner.
  • Identify trends within the medical community in assigned territories, and nationally.
  • Attend meetings, with policyholder and other stakeholders, and industry conferences as required.
  • Support MIEC Pillars and Core Competencies.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and work equivalent experience.
  • Maintain an active Broker’s license; if not currently licensed, must obtain license in 90 days.
  • 3-5 years Underwriting experience.
  • Insurance industry designation preferred (CPCU, RPLU, ARM, CPHRM, AINS, etc…)

  • Able to plan, organize, assign and maintain priorities of various activities.
  • Demonstrate sound independent judgment and good analytic ability in solving problems.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Prepare and effectively present recommendations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with public and other professionals.
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork by working with others throughout MIEC.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
  • May be required to work hours beyond core business hours.
  • Proven ability to work on a team or operate independently.
  • Able to succeed in high volume environment requiring personal organization, multitasking, and regular reprioritization with short turnaround time on items of high impact.
  • Experience in researching and accurately resolving problems while working under pressure and within time constraints.
  • Strong customer service skills for use with internal and external customers with ability to effectively handle incoming calls and deal with difficult situations.
  • Comfort with a structured, process-based approach to underwriting, including limitations in levels of authority. Authority level increases with increasing competence.
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness with strong documentation skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds for conference material and distribution. Typing repetitive motion and light bending and kneeling to access file cabinets. The ability to talk and express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word to provide instructions.

Work Environment

  • Headquarters is located in Oakland, California, with satellite offices in AK, HI, and ID.
  • This position is a combination of remote & onsite work in one of our offices (CA, AK, HI, or ID), with the potential to be 100% remote.

Salary based on experience.
