Does MPL Association offer MPL insurance coverage?

MPL Association is a non-profit trade association whose members are MPL insurance providers. For information on insurance coverage in your state, please access the MPL Association Member Directory and search by state of coverage for companies you can contact for further information.


Is MPL Association incorporated?

Yes. MPL Association is a corporation. It was incorporated in the state of New Jersey.


What kind of non-profit organization is MPL Association?

MPL Association qualifies as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501 (C) 6 of the Internal Revenue Code and its income is exempt from federal and state income taxes except for unrelated business income.


Does MPL Association have affiliates?

Yes. MPL Association has a PAC and a Foundation. MPL Association Political Action Committee (PAC) is organized under Section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code. The MPL Association Education and Research Foundation is formed as a non-profit, non-private foundation under Section 501(C) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code.


Government Relations


Does the Government Relations Department provide state based information?

Historically, MPL Association has predominately focused on Federal policy, but as part of our strategic plan we are reaching out to our member companies and their government relations staff to find ways we can work together to further state specific tort reform measures. MPL Association has also formed a state-based government committee where ideas and updates on state specific information are discussed. We will soon have updated state legislative alerts available, as well, as state legislatures’ debate legislation impacting MPL Association members.


What other advocacy organizations does MPL Association partner with?

The government relations team has a robust network of organizations they work with encompassing healthcare and insurance issues. We are also the chair of the Health Coalition on Liability and Access (HCLA), which is a key resource for Members of Congress and their staffs, state and federal government agencies, healthcare policy experts, the media, and the public. In addition to analyzing legislative policy initiatives, testifying before the U.S. Congress, sponsoring congressional staff briefings, conducting public opinion polling and candidate surveys, the HCLA sponsors Protect Patients Now (PPN), a grassroots advocacy organization comprised of physicians, patients and concerned citizens dedicated to reforming our nation’s broken liability system.

The Medical Liability Conference, formerly known as our Annual Meeting, is open to non-members. All other workshops and meetings are for members only.

I can no longer attend a meeting I registered for and it is past the refund date. Can I send someone in my place?

Yes. You may send a substitute in your place. Please fill out a registration form for the new attendee. In the payment section write "transfer from (your name)". Please fax or e-mail the new registration form to 301.527.0410 or send to Meetings@MPLassociation.org.


Do you offer continuing education credits?*

Continuing Education
The delivery method for all sessions is group live. Credit certification for individual sessions may vary dependent upon the terms of compliance and conflict of interest issues and resolution. Continuing Education credits issued for participation in the CE activity may not apply toward license renewal in all states. It is the responsibility of each participant to verify the requirements of his/her state licensing board(s). The Introduction to MPLI program content is designed for basic to intermediate level knowledge. Advanced preparation for attendees is not necessary. Continuing Medical Education
The MPL Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Continuing Education for Dentists
The MPL Association is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to the provider or to ADA CERP at www/ada.org/cerp.

Continuing Professional Education
The MPL Association is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE sponsors through its website: www.learningmarket.org.

Do you release state data?

We do not release state data because claim data for a participating company may be identified.


What is the definition of no medical misadventure?

"No medical misadventure" is a code used in the absence of a medical mishap. If a claim has no medical misadventure, but is felt to have legal merit, there is an appropriate associated issue designated in the database. These can be problems with records, consent issues, laboratory issues or even assault/battery, abandonment, etc.


Do you have premium information?

No, there is no national repository of this information. Individuals should consult their state insurance departments. Some states collect premium data, others do not. The Medical Liability Monitor has some premium information, their website is www.medicalliabilitymonitor.com.


I want to see what claims are named for X medical condition or the Y medical specialty. What data do you have on this issue?

We recommend purchasing either the PIAA MPL Closed Claims Comparative or the PIAA MPL Specialty Specific Series.


How can I request specific information that is not published in your reports?

Please complete the Data Request Form to request a special query to be performed in the MPL Association Data Sharing Project. There is an associated fee charged based on membership status (PIAA members: $100/hr, DSP participants: 1 hour free per reporting cycle then $50/hr, and non-PIAA members: $200/hr). During reporting cycles, we may not take requests for special queries from nonmembers.


How do I cite MPL Association data?

Please provide a citation in the reference list of your publication, including this content, irrespective of the specific format for references in your publication:

Does the MPL Association Data Sharing Project collect exposure data?

No, exposure data is not collected; therefore, the relative frequency of the claims reported cannot be measured. In addition, the identities of claimants, insureds, or other parties are not captured.
