Job Description

Open to candidates near any BETA office location: Alamo, Glendale, Granite Bay or San Diego.

This position underwrites liability coverage for BETA’s healthcare facilities and HealthPro medical groups employing the methods necessary to meet projected contribution/premium and profitability goals and is responsible for providing coverage contract and policy maintenance to our customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Incumbent must have the skills, abilities, and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Experience working with and understanding the needs of policyholders (hospitals and physicians as well as allied clinical practices); providing solutions to their risk prevention and insurance needs is a critical success factor.
  • Ability to develop stable relationships with state regulators and legislators regarding issues critical to the success of the organization, understanding issues such as: tort reform; proposition advocacy or resistance; and other matters that safeguard the interests of policyholders and be able to present a case for adoption of new regulations that safeguard the interests of insured policyholders.
  • Deep insurance industry experience is a must. Experience in medical professional liability, hospital and healthcare professional liability, allied healthcare workers’ compensation areas is highly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of the strategic and tactical considerations that any insurance company must address. This includes a successful track record in producing underwriting profit; maintaining an acceptable combined ratio or loss ratio; and building a strong operating ratio.

Requirements - Education Skills

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in insurance underwriting, preferably in hospital and/or physician malpractice High School Diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or insurance designations preferred
  • Ability to build strong key account relationships and manage customer expectations under changing market conditions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and employ time management skills to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including: Word, Excel, and other business-related software

Travel

  • Must have reliable and safe transportation to other BETA offices and business partners. Employee(s) using their own personal vehicle for business use, must maintain: a valid California driver’s license, proper vehicle registration and California’s minimum automobile insurance coverage limits
  • Ability to travel

Physical Requirements

The requirements listed below are representative of the physical ability required:

  • Ability to sit and use computer workstation, including keyboard and visual display terminal, for extended period of time
  • Ability to stand, and navigate within the work environment as needed
  • May require the ability to lift files (up to 25 lbs.) open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. Proper lifting techniques required
  • May regularly required to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, squat, balance, reach above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting for periodic periods throughout the day
  • Repetitive motion of upper extremities; gripping, pinching and fine manipulation
