MedMal Direct Insurance Company (MedMal Direct), an Integris Group company, is a premier medical
professional liability insurance company located in Jacksonville, Florida currently seeking candidates for
its Senior Underwriter position.
Summary
The Senior Underwriter will perform a variety of research and analytical duties to properly assess and
rate insurance risk exposures. Works with the MedMal Direct Account Management and Underwriting
teams in an organized and professional manner to ensure we provide an exceptional customer
experience to our insureds. Must be able to manage time and deadlines independently.
Specific Requirements
7+ years experience as an insurance underwriter; MPL experience preferred; designated or in the
process of pursuing an insurance related designation or advanced degree related to insurance;
demonstrated ability to analyze risk and rate risk accordingly within guidelines; establish rapport and
positive working relationship with customers (internal Sales and Account Managers); Ability to
participate in constructive team collaboration and exchange of ideas and consideration of opposing
viewpoints; Excellent written and verbal skills; Microsoft Office Suite proficiency. Periodic travel may be
required.
Specific Responsibilities
- Identify and analyze risks presented within the medical practice and how they will impact the
malpractice insurance risk of the company for new business, renewals and requests to add
insureds. Document the file appropriately;
- Translate the identified risks into a coverage decision and corresponding insurance pricing within
the rules and guidelines set forth by the company; Team Collaboration is required;
- Issue the policies & endorsements to reflect the coverage and pricing offered by the company;
- Process insured removal, policy cancellation and tail requests submitted by insureds within the
rules and guidelines set forth by the company;
- Make recommendations for changes to the company’s underwriting guidelines;
- Participate, as requested, in the company’s development of processing systems and workflows;
- Make recommendations for changes / improvements to the company’s workflows;
- Assist, as requested, with training and development of underwriters and technicians within the
department;
- Participate constructively in the exchange of ideas and opposing viewpoints.
Qualifications
- Able to plan, organize, assign and maintain priorities of various activities.
- Demonstrate sound independent judgment and good analytic ability in solving problems.
- Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Prepare and effectively present recommendations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationship with public and other professionals.
- Demonstrate effective teamwork by working with others throughout MIEC.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
- May be required to work hours beyond core business hours.
- Proven ability to work on a team or operate independently.
- Able to succeed in high volume environment requiring personal organization, multitasking, and regular reprioritization with short turnaround time on items of high impact.
- Experience in researching and accurately resolving problems while working under pressure and within time constraints.
- Strong customer service skills for use with internal and external customers with ability to effectively handle incoming calls and deal with difficult situations.
- Comfort with a structured, process-based approach to underwriting, including limitations in levels of authority. Authority level increases with increasing competence.
- Attention to detail and thoroughness with strong documentation skills.
- Maintain confidentiality.
Education, Experience and Skills Required
- Seven (7) years or more of underwriting experience, MPL background preferred;
- Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines;
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to follow procedures;
- Ability to perform in a high-volume, production-type environment;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and
Outlook, and ability to learn new computer software applications;
- Possess or pursue an insurance related designation (CPCU or RPLU) or advanced degree related to
insurance.
