Since 1955, Texas Medical Association Insurance Trust (TMAIT/TMA Insurance Trust) has served as trusted advisors for Texas physicians, their families, and their employees. Created and exclusively endorsed by the Texas Medical Association, TMA Insurance Trust partners with TMA member physicians to meet their personal insurance needs and help protect their livelihood.

The TMA Insurance Trust’s history is of excellent service and careful stewardship of assets under skilled leadership with support from the Board, professional staff and a network of actuary, financial and legal consultants. The Agency’s brokerage business competes in the insurance market with that strong reputation thereby attracting and supporting customers with ongoing collaboration with TMA.

With the upcoming retirement of a long serving leader, TMAIT is seeking an Executive Director. The position is headquartered in Austin where the organization employs 20 long-serving staff working on-site.

Leadership Opportunity

The Executive Director will continue to advance the mission of the TMA Insurance Trust. This leader will oversee the financial and executive management of the TMA Insurance Trust and its subsidiaries and will insure the continuation of its key assets. This leader will also insure the overall effectiveness of the insurance program including growth, stability, service and maintenance of viable products that provide value to TMA members.

The Executive Director will work closely with the Insurance Trust Board, staff, consultants, and TMA and its members to insure that the products offered by TMAIT are appropriate and that the services offered are of the highest quality. The Executive Director will lead in anticipating the needs of younger physicians and respond proactively. The leader will work directly with member physicians and have familiarity of their needs and communication styles. The Executive Director reports to and insures the smooth operations of the TMAIT’s professional volunteer Board of Directors comprised of TMA member physicians

The Executive Director will inherit a strong staff and network of financial, legal and actuary consultants and will continue to cultivate those key relationships while insuring all performance objectives are established and met. The Executive Director will be an outstanding steward of the Insurance Trust’s accumulated financial and human resource assets.

The Executive Director will maintain regular communications with the Board of Directors and provide them with the necessary support, counsel, and information required for effective governance.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and direct all activities of TMAIT
  • Work with the TMAIT Board to determine the Trust’s basic services and insurance philosophy, including products, services, policies, objectives, and goals
  • Manage staffing needs to maximize Trust effectiveness
  • Set and demonstrates high standards of professional, technical, and business conduct and competence for staff
  • Hire and manage the Trust’s office staff
  • Maintain regular communications with the TMAIT Board and provides them with the necessary support
  • Manage the Insurance Program which includes customer service, promotions, enrollment, premium collection, and administration
  • Consult with the consulting actuary and legal counsel on a wide variety of matters pertaining to the program
  • Prepare and present reports, surveys, and statistical data for the Executive Vice President, Committees, Councils, and Trustees
  • Coordinate and direct insurance matters with county medical societies
  • Keep informed of competitive services, products, and companies
  • Consult with the Trust’s insurance carriers
  • Respond to member inquiries on policy provisions
  • Prepare and monitor the annual budget
  • Maintain a self-development program to increase personal effectiveness and broaden knowledge and skill
  • Perform other related duties as directed or required

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Group 1 Life & Health license, as well as a Property & Casualty license.
  • Thorough understanding of association sponsored group insurance programs.
  • BA; MA preferred
  • 3-5 years relevant experience in a management setting
  • Strong Work experience in a healthcare association setting
  • Experience with a professional Board of Directors
  • Relevant executive or senior-level experience with physicians and volunteer Boards in a healthcare setting
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining relationships across a wide spectrum
  • In-person work environment
