MPL Association Names Recipients of 2022 MPL Industry Defender Award


(Rockville, MD, May 5, 2022)— The Medical Professional Liability (MPL) Association has awarded its 2022 MPL Industry Defender Award to Lori A. Barker, C. Wm. Bradley, Jr., Carl Hagwood, Roger McMillan, Michel J.J. de Ridder, and Coreen Silverman. This award is presented to defense attorneys in recognition for their exceptional support of the MPL industry.

Lori A. Barker, JD
Barker joined Abbott Nicholson, PC as a shareholder in 2016. She concentrates her practice in litigation with emphasis on the defense of healthcare facilities and providers in medical professional liability actions. Barker also provides consulting services to physicians, healthcare facilities, physician practice groups, and insurance companies in areas of practice management, e-health records, and HIPAA compliance issues. In addition, Ms. Barker is a national speaker on issues in obstetrical medicine and the law, including managing exposure, practice patterns, electronic health records liability, e-discovery, and healthcare technology. She has been named a Michigan Super Lawyer and a DBusiness Top Lawyer each year since 2012, and one of Michigan’s Top 50 Women Lawyers each year since 2013.

C. Wm. Bradley, Jr.
A senior partner at Bradley Murchison, Bradley represents healthcare providers and other professionals in court, on appeal, and before regulatory agencies. His practice consists principally of the defense of medical professional liability actions in the Louisiana state and federal courts. He also has an extensive appellate practice. Bradley has been involved in most of the major cases that have challenged the constitutionality of the “cap” as well as those cases that have alleged that the specific allegations of a patient injury fall outside the parameters of the Louisiana malpractice statute. Named as one of The Best Lawyers in America, New Orleans, LA in 2022 for Commercial Litigation, Mass Tort Litigation/Class Actions—Defendants, Personal Injury Litigation—Defendants, Product Liability Litigation—Defendants, Professional Malpractice Law—Defendants, Bradley has also been awarded “Top Lawyer” in New Orleans by New Orleans Magazine for medical malpractice.

Carl Hagwood, JD
Hagwood is a founding shareholder of Hagwood and Tipton PC. He has defended general casualty claims, medical professional liability claims against physicians and hospitals, and medical negligence claims against nursing home and assisted living providers in a wide range of states. Hagwood uses innovative litigation approaches involving multi-media visual technology in the complex medical negligence and long-term care cases that he defends and gives demonstrations of this technology to panel-counsel members for leading MPL insurers and at long-term care panel-counsel meetings. In 2003, Hagwood defended a physician in Winters v. Wright, a case that established precedent eliminating the "captain of the ship" doctrine when it came to surgeons in Mississippi.

Roger McMillan
McMillan is head of healthcare and managing partner at Carson McDowell LLP, Northern Ireland’s largest commercial law firm. Specializing in high-value, complex clinical negligence claims and regulatory/professional discipline investigations, he has successfully defended numerous healthcare professionals. McMillan is a founding member of the Northern Ireland Law Society’s Clinical Negligence Practitioners’ Group and the QBD Medical Negligence Subcommittee and has championed the success and influence of these organizations, driving improvements in claims case management including the drafting of Northern Ireland’s Protocol for Clinical Negligence Litigation and Experts’ Practice Direction in 2009, 2012, and 2021.

Michel J.J. de Ridder, MD, Esq.
Dr. de Ridder simultaneously studied law and medicine at Utrecht University, ultimately choosing to pursue a law career. A partner at KBS Advocaten in the Netherlands, he has more than 25 years of experience in medical defense. Dr. de Ridder assists medical liability insurance companies and their insured health insurance companies and healthcare institutions in the field of civil, disciplinary, and criminal liability. He has conducted many proceedings in the area of liability of care providers and healthcare institutions. He also focuses on employer liability of healthcare institutions and (defective) medical aid cases. Dr. de Ridder is a member of the association of personal injury lawyers, the association of disciplinary lawyers and the association of health law. He is also a member of the editorial staff of the magazine 'Letsel & Schade' of the Stichting Werkgroep Artsen Advocaten and regularly publishes articles in magazines in the field of medical liability.

Coreen Silverman, Esq.
A partner at Hancock Daniel, Silverman has dedicated her entire legal career to defending healthcare providers facing allegations of malpractice, HIPAA violations, peer review and credentialing issues, civil rights violations, and regulatory misconduct. She has tried more than 50 jury trials with 99% defense verdicts and has successfully defended numerous § 1983 civil rights claims brought against correctional healthcare providers; represented licensees before regulatory agencies; and assisted physicians in HIPAA, credentialing matters, and peer review investigations. Silverman received her law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and is admitted to practice in New York and Virginia. She has repeatedly been recognized by Virginia Lawyers Weekly for excellence in achieving top defense verdicts. She has received the distinguished AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
