The Medical Professional Liability Association (MPL Association) is the leading trade organization representing the MPL community. Association members are MPL insurance companies, risk retention groups, captives, trusts, and other entities.

These enterprises are owned and/or operated by physicians, hospitals, health systems, dentists and oral maxillofacial surgeons, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other healthcare professionals who support the quality delivery of healthcare and practice of medicine.

No other organization understands the business of MPL better.

The MPL Association offers comprehensive resources for professional education and training, networking, compilation and dissemination of data, and risk mitigation strategies all designed to help companies broaden their understanding of medical indemnity and insurance issues.

  • The MPL Association serves as the industry’s liaison with all aspects of the federal government, from Congress to the administrative agencies (including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Department of Health & Human Services, Federal Insurance Office, etc.). Serving as the definitive source of all things MPL-related, the Association ensures that federal government officials have the facts about our industry. The Association also acts as the industry’s voice before the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and assists member companies in their interactions with state legislators and regulators as well.
  • The MPL Association Data Sharing Project (DSP), launched in 1985, is the largest ongoing independent collaborative database of MPL claims and lawsuits. Companies can use data from the DSP to study claims patterns, pinpoint the most vulnerable areas of healthcare delivery, and to support risk management and risk financing decisions.
  • Offering unparalleled opportunities for peer-to-peer learning and knowledge sharing, the MPL Association hosts a wide range of meetings and events throughout the year focusing on the key disciplinary areas of an insurance operation.
  • The MPL Association provides members with a diverse range of communications—including the quarterly magazine Inside Medical Liability, weekly electronic newsletter MPL Association Newsbriefs, periodic data and advocacy updates, and the MPL Association website—all rich sources of information on relevant topics and the latest trends in claims, risk mitigation and adverse event prevention strategies, cross-border coverage for healthcare entities, and more.
